What is Music Therapy?
The American Music Therapy Association Defines Music Therapy as…
“the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.”
Music therapists generally help their clients achieve their goals through the four following intervention types:

- Composition: Helping clients write their own original music (e.g. Legacy songwriting, rap songwriting with the client)
- Recreation: Playing precomposed songs with the clients (e.g. Therapeutic music lessons)
- Improvisation: supporting the client in spontaneous music making (e.g. Facilitated drum circles)
- Listening: Guiding the client through a therapeutic music listening experience (e.g. Guided relaxation with music, mixed expressive arts)
